At which business would you expect to see a “zarf”?
Starbucks
Zarf is a peculiar looking word that comes from Arabic meaning "container, envelope". In ancient times, a zarf was a metal chalice placed around the container that holds coffee, to prevent the heat from burning your fingers. The name for the fancy cup holder has morphed into the modern-day collapsible cardboard sleeve that comes wrapped around your skinny double mochachino at Starbucks. Zarf may seem like a forgotten term for an ancient item but it’s still very much used today interchangeably with the coffee cup sleeve.
