The Da Vinci Code, a 2003 best-seller by Dan Brown, follows Brown’s character Robert Langdon becoming involved in a battle between The Priory of Sion and Opus Dei after a murder in the Louvre; the two groups in the book are quarreling over the alternative religious theory that the Merovingian line of French kings was descended from Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. Post-publication, it was very negatively received by the Catholic church. The book was later made into a 2006 film starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.
