In 2017 this city celebrated its 375th birthday & the 50th anniv. of an event that made it an international tourist destination
On May 17, 1642, a group led by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve founded a mission settlement known as Ville-Marie on an island in the St. Lawrence River. That settlement eventually became known as Montréal. Due to river rapids in the area, portages were required in order to travel, making the settlement important for the 17th-century fur trade. The city’s growth was spurred on by the Lachine Canal’s completion in the 19th century, which allowed for those rapids to be bypassed. The city played host to a World’s Fair in 1967, which turned it into a major international city; the success of that Expo led to the city being awarded Canada’s first Major League Baseball team, the Expos (now the Washington Nationals), as well as the 1976 Summer Olympics.
