In addition to inventing the game of basketball, what piece of sporting equipment did James Naismith invent?
James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891, and is also credited with designing the first football helmet. On December 15th, 1891 at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, James Naismith unveiled a new game called basketball. The game was played nine-on-nine, there was a jump ball held after every basket scored, and there was no dribbling. The "Father of Basketball," is said to have invented the football helmet to protect his damaged ears while playing football for the YMCA International Training College in 1891.
