In which year did Shakespeare finally retire from public life and return to Stratford?
1611
Shakespeare bought New Place in 1597 but did not move there until he retired in 1611. It is not there any more as in 1759, the then owner, Reverend Francis Gastrell, got fed up with the tourists and ordered his servants to pull down Shakespeare's house. The people of Stratford drove him out of town!
