The namesake of a popular variety of tea, who served as the Prime Minister of the U.K. in the 1830s?
Every tea drinker knows Earl Grey tea, the world’s favorite flavored tea. But few people know that the tea is named after Earl Charles Grey, Britain's Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834. His most notable political achievements include the Reform Act of 1832 and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, yet he is most well known throughout history for the tea bearing his name. He reputedly received a gift, probably a diplomatic present, of tea that was flavoured with bergamot oil. It became so popular that he asked British tea merchants to recreate it.
