The state of Rhode Island has just one area code. What is it?
Area code 401 is the area code that serves the entire state of Rhode Island. 401 is one of the original 86 North American area codes, which were created in 1947. Because of its low population, Rhode Island is one of only twelve states to only have just one area code. Despite the proliferation of cell phones, 401 is not projected to be exhausted until after 2050. The 12 U.S. states that have only one area code are: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.
