The Peter Shaffer play Amadeus, winner of the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play, is a fictionalized account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. The play opens many years after Mozart’s death with Salieri claiming he poisoned Mozart. The 1984 film adaptation also won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
