What color is an airplane's "black box" flight recorder?
A flight recorder is an electronic recording device placed in an aircraft for the purpose of facilitating the investigation of aviation accidents and incidents. Although they are called "black boxes," aviation recorders are actually painted bright orange. This distinct color, along with the strips of reflective tape attached to the recorders' exteriors, help investigators locate the black boxes following an accident. “Black boxes” are most commonly installed in the rear of the aircraft where they are more likely to survive the impact of a crash. They have been required in commercial aircraft in the U.S. since 1967.
