What did General Sherman give Abraham Lincoln for Christmas in 1864?

Answer:

A city

On December 22, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman presented the city of Savannah, Georgia, to President Abraham Lincoln. After capturing the city in his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta, General Sherman sent President Lincoln a telegram saying, "I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah”. Savannah had been one of the last major ports that remained open to the Confederates. In a reply to the telegram that’s dated December 26, 1864, President Lincoln wrote: “Many, many thanks for your Christmas gift.”
