Berkelium is a radioactive metallic element with the symbol Bk. It was named after the University of California at Berkeley where it was first synthesized. Berkelium is a silvery-white highly radioactive soft metal. Berkelium is a member of the actinide group of elements, which are some of the heaviest, yet least understood chemical elements on Earth. Since 1967, just over 1 gram of berkelium has been produced, in total. Since so little Berkelium has ever been produced, very little is known about its uses or properties.
