What percentage of police officers in the U.S. are women?
Law enforcement in the United States is an indisputably male-dominated profession. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, women make up just 12.6 percent of all police officers. In recent decades, women have accounted for a growing share of America’s police officers, but this growth has been relatively slow. Studies have shown that female officers can positively impact a community and the performance of a police department as a whole. The first policewomen in the U.S. was Marie Owens, who joined the Chicago Police department in 1891.
