Hb or Hgb are abbreviations for Hemoglobin; the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. It is made up of 4 proteins. Once one of them is bound to oxygen, it makes it easier for the other forms to bind. The normal range for hemoglobin in men is 13.5 to 17.5 grams per deciliter. For women, 12.0 to 15.5 grams per deciliter.
