Where did the first Starbucks open?
The first Starbucks opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 30, 1971, by three partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker opened their first store near the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle. They named it “Starbucks” after the first mate in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick. Starbucks is now the largest coffeehouse in the world and operates over 30,000 locations in over 77 countries and territories.
