Tonto is a fictional character and companion of the Lone Ranger. Primarily through his presence on radio and television, Tonto was one of the best-known Native American characters in 20th-century popular culture. Tonto was introduced in 1933 in the 11th radio episode of The Lone Ranger in order to give the Lone Ranger someone to talk to. In Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, "tonto" translates as "idiot", "stupid", or "fool". His original name is kept in the Italian dubbed version of the show, however the character is referred to as "Toro" in the Spanish dubbed version (Spanish for "bull").
