Penny
On this day in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Following his death, Lincoln became known as the "Great Emancipator" for his efforts in ending slavery in America with his Emancipation Proclamation. In 1909, Lincoln became the first president to be featured on a circulating coin. President Theodore Roosevelt and the United States Treasury Department decided to celebrate what would have been Lincoln's 100th birthday by featuring his image on the one-cent coin.
