Which social media site has a fungus named after it?
In 2018, a Danish biologist was browsing her Twitter feed and happened upon a photo of a millipede shared by a colleague. Looking closer, she noticed what looked like a fungus on the insect's surface. As it happens, she had discovered a new type of parasitic fungus that feeds off of millipede reproductive organs. Given that she would never have noticed it were it not for a social media post, the discovery was named “Troglomyces twitteri.” So who says scrolling your Twitter feed is a waste of time?
