Which U.S. President lost both his wife and mother on Valentine's Day?
Theodore Roosevelt's mother and wife died only hours apart on Valentine's Day in 1884. Each loss was an unexpected shock. His 48-year-old mother, Martha "Mittie" Roosevelt, had been taken ill and succumbed to typhoid fever. On the same day, his wife of four years, Alice Lee, died of Bright’s disease, a severe kidney ailment. Only two days before her death, Alice Lee had given birth to the couple’s daughter, Alice. In his diary, Roosevelt marked Valentine's Day 1884 with a black “X” and wrote, "The light has gone out of my life."
