Who was president of the United States for eight hours on July 13, 1985?

Answer:

George H. W. Bush

On July 13, 1985, when President Reagan underwent colon cancer surgery, Vice President George H. W. Bush became the first "acting president" of the United States. Reagan sent letters to the speaker of the House and the Senate president pro tempore advising them he "will be briefly and temporarily incapable of discharging the Constitutional powers and duties of the office of the president" and thus "Vice President George Bush shall discharge those powers and duties". This transfer of power lasted all of eight hours -- from 11:28 a.m. until 7:22 p.m. Various press reports say that for most of his tenure as acting president, George H. W. Bush played tennis.
